Though Spindle’s End is marketed as a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, what binds the two works is not so much the plot—which bears precious few points in common—but the broader essence of fairy tale, which McKinley maintains throughout her narrative.

McKinley’s teen narrator takes some getting used to, but her voice adds a touch more realism to this interesting mix of real world and fantasy (which the reader confronts via immersion; a pleasingly naturalistic approach). Animals and origami give the story heart.
