A rare instance of a series recovering from a bad stumble and righting itself late in the piece. The final season of Killjoys is focussed and coherent, resetting with purpose to stage a ten-episode, fun and fitting sprint for the finish line.

Killjoys season four follows the trend of programmes seeking higher and higher stakes only to lose their way and fall into a chasm of pointlessness. The character dynamic remains true and the scripting is ingenious, but it’s a never-ending fall to nowhere.

In its third season, Killjoys crosses the point of no return where episodes become no longer self-contained but rather beads in a plot-arc necklace. The overall story may still pull viewers in (‘tis the way of manipulation) but the loss is lamentable.

It is a tribute to the appeal of Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and Johnny and D’avin Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore and Luke Macfarlane) that the titular bounty-hunting aspect of Killjoys has been left behind but the show still works, mixing action, dystopia and humour.

Firefly meets Banshee in this nicely balanced SF action adventure series (with touches of humour). The dynamic between the three bounty hunters affords plenty of scope for developing storylines, as does the socio-political complexity of the dystopian future in which they operate.
