While Feist’s leisurely characterisation of the Hastings family draws the reader in and makes them susceptible to the creeping dread of faerie lore, the workmanlike omniscient narrative and muddled plot (once removed of its glamour) are unlikely to truly unsettle adult readers.

McGuire has crafted a multifaceted faerie world overlaid upon modern-day San Francisco. Even though the crime and investigation don’t amount to much, October Daye remains an easy protagonist to follow, her sardonic faux-hardboiled narration well-handled in audio form by Mary Robinette Kowal.
